Embracing My Polynesian Heritage, Lets Talk Story

Embracing My Polynesian Heritage, Lets Talk Story

Posted by Penelope Park on May 12th 2022

As I sit in my candy store, surrounded by vibrant colors and the sweet scent of sugary delights, I can't help but reflect on my Polynesian roots. My father's side of the family hails from the beautiful islands of Hawaii, where food is not just sustenance—it's a deep-seated part of our culture, intertwined with the spirit of aloha and love.

One of the treasures I hold dear is our beloved li hing mui, a flavor that many Hawaiian families cherish. For those unfamiliar, li hing mui translates to "traveling plum," and it carries a rich history that traces back to China. Over the years, it has become a staple in Hawaiian cuisine, best known as "salted dried plum."

What makes li hing mui so special? Its unique flavor profile combines sweet, salty, and sour notes, creating a taste sensation that enhances just about anything it touches. Whether it's sprinkled on fresh fruit, mixed into ice cream, or infused into our first-ever li hing mui crystal candy, this delightful ingredient brings joy to so many.

When I introduce this flavor to the mainland, I don’t just share a snack; I share a piece of my heart. Each bite of li hing mui reminds me of family gatherings, laughter, and the warmth of those who have come before me. It’s a connection to a place I can no longer visit, but one that lives on in my memories—especially in the embrace of those who have departed with the setting sun.

In Hawaii, food is more than just a meal; it’s a celebration of diversity, culture, and community. It weaves together stories of love, tradition, and shared experiences. By bringing li hing mui to a broader audience, I hope to celebrate that spirit and introduce others to the flavors that define my heritage.

As I continue to create sweet treats infused with my Polynesian roots, I am reminded that food has a unique power to unite us. It transcends borders and brings people together, just as the culture of aloha does. I invite everyone to savor the essence of li hing mui and experience a taste of Hawaii—one sweet bite at a time.

Let’s carry on the tradition, share the love, and create new memories together!
